The factual difference is that those companies don't just have the ability to trawl through your data, they actually do it.

Imagine you allowed Facebook to send people into your house to take pictures, so they could see what cleaning products and the like you buy and sell that information to advertisers. The government wouldn't need a warrant to subpoena those pictures in Facebook's possession of what's in your house.
