Amazon has become a marketplace for cheap sometimes harmful chinese knockoffs. Amazon doesn't even check what is being sold. I only order directly from places I trust. http://nbcnews.com/business/recall/cheap-chinese-faucets-dan...

I want to know how you can be a trillion dollar tech company with unlimited access to all the best minds and AI tools and whatever… and still have a busted-ass mobile app fronting their store. For YEARS.

Trying to replace creative work is futile. How do you teach taste to something that can't feel?

The lack of excitement tells you no one wants this.

Unfortunately, I think it's likely to be quite successful. I'd much rather believe that everyone everywhere is a discerning consumer, but I don't think that's the case if we look at the fictional AI artists in the charts at the moment.

>AI only exists because the military needs are propping it up

AI already serves as a surveillance tool and is being used by Palantir.

AI already serves as a surveillance tool and is being used by Palantir.

Agreed but the actual funding is primarily for military use. Palantir would not be able to fund all these data-centers by themselves. They are secondary beneficiaries.

We are already in low-hire low-fire job market where while there aren't massive layoffs to spike up unemployment there also aren't as many vacancies.

>the most unskilled labor

People are worried about white-collar not blue-collar jobs being replaced. Robotics is obviously a whole different field from AI.

> Robotics is obviously a whole different field from AI

I agree, but people are conflating the two. We have seen a lot of advancements in robotics, but as of current that only makes the economics worse. We're not seeing the complexity of robots going down and we're seeing the R&D costs going up, etc.

If it didn't make sense a few years ago to buy a crappy robot that can barely do the task because your business will never make money doing it, it probably doesn't make sense this year to buy a robot that still can't accomplish the tasks and is more expensive.

Yeah, although in the "Something big is happening" Shumer did say at the end "Eventually, robots will handle physical work too. They're not quite there yet. But "not quite there yet" in AI terms has a way of becoming "here" faster than anyone expects."

Being the hype-man that he is I assume he meant humanoid robots - I think he's being silly here, and the sentence made me roll my eyes.

what difference does it make if the robots are humanoid or not?

It merely reflects the designer's willingness to engage in sci-fi tropes.

People keep referencing history but this really is unprecedented. We are approaching singularity and many people will become obsolete in all areas. There are no new hypothetical jobs waiting on the horizon.

This isn't even the first time Republicans portrayed Obama as a monkey. It was kind of a low-hanging meme for them during his presidency.

[flagged]

Yeah... no. You're not going to convince anyone that Obama and his wife were portrayed as apes, monkeys, what have you by the Trump administration as a compliment or that there was some kind of reverse racism against white people involved, or a sly jab at Trump's intelligence.

I'm half convinced you're doing satire here, and you don't even believe it yourself.

Trump posts video of Obama as an ape

Internet: "It is 4D chess!"

You can't make this up.

The idea is to keep raising the bar of absurdity higher and higher to prove that there are no consequences, making the next worse offense easier. All with the seal of approval from the entire power class.

Maybe not 4d chess, but it's working pretty well.

I think you are thinking of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Overton_window which might be true

It's definitely what they do, look to Trump influencers like Bannon and Miller

You are talking about intrinsic vs extrinsic value. Most work people do is for money (extrinsic) but no one is stopping you from doing work for the former. I learn/program for fun in my spare time and AI doesn't stop that.

It can if you can’t make a living doing whatever it is you do for a living.

Just like with everything, Trump backs out last minute after a series of threats.

It's not called TACO for nothing

Yup, just ask Maduro. He called Trump's bluff and he's doing fine.
