We can boil it down to incentives. Are the incentives (we recognize) strong enough to get us to pay for a membership and go to the gym? Maybe yes. Maybe no. Maybe maybe. The "maybe Maybe" wins the day in most cases. It's no surprise that the gyms are winning out here. Their goal is sales not necessarily our fitness. If they make good coin and facilitate people getting fit then good show. If they make good coin and the customers fail well such is life. Free will is after all free will.
So what can we say for the minority that pay the 30(+) silver pieces and actually make it happen? I say good show! To those who pay and drop off I say keep on; don't give up, go back and try again! Tomorrow is another day. Don't Judas yourself.
I don't know where this guy works but there was a zero tolerance policy on cheating and plagiarism were I went to university. Heck my CEGEP had the same policy too. There's an independent review board to investigate then discipline students so that professors and TAs can focus on teaching. Students automatically fail the course and are required to take an ethics course the next semester and retake the course regardless if it was core or an elective.
EDIT: I just read where he teaches. I'm still surprised there's no policy or that the policy isn't enforced.
I'm questioning the way respondents are classified.
I chose 'Canada' as my region since I'm from Montreal. My first language is English and I'm fluent French. I did the first half of elementary school in French. Firstly non-Quebec anglophones tend to have better grammar and larger vocabularies than anglophone Quebecers. Secondly it doesn't take into account that English can be a 3rd language . Most immigrants to Quebec are required by law to attend French language elementary and high schools (there are exceptions). Immigrant children who's first language isn't English or French (the majority) take on two new languages, English being their 3rd after French. English tends to be the social language for many.
Montreal has a strong tech industry employing bilingual/multilingual people many of which read HN and possibly took part in the survey. My gut feeling is that English speaking Quebecers are skewing the stats. More granular control over region will be useful; show some insight to this reality.
Note: I traveled through China and south east Asia last year and found the quality of English to be much better than I expected. Considering Indochina ruled by the French I didn't find a person who could speak it. To possibly classify any country as "non-English-speaking" is kind of silly. Every country is "other-English-speaking" but then again it's a subjective classification isn't it. Doesn't China have the largest English speaking population now...
I downloaded one of the sites in the torrent titled Zombies. It's about a British girl who organizes a community effort to make a Zombie Movie. Sure the site was ripped but not the video content. Nothing on the page is worth seeing other than the video. Once the BBC turns off access to that stream the archive is virtually useless. I'm going to checkout more ripped sites; my gut says they're probably video heavy too.
I've looked at it a bit more. All the smaller sites are just place holders for lesser important topics or for streaming BBC shows. Sure the torrent saves some user comments (not all) and images (not all, some links are broken) but there's not really a lot of meat since that content is periphery.
I'd say that most of the valuable content is still stored on the BBC servers, in the DB where it's being served from right now. I'm sure they're going to repurpose the good stuff if they haven't already. I have an acquaintance who works in the web department at the CBC. They've implemented a pretty neat CMS to repurpose their older media to work with their latest site. I can see the BBC doing the same.
