This is the correct response. I use both GrapheneOS and LineageOS. But LineageOS focus is on delivering newer versions of Android to many phones abandoned by their OEM. GOS exclusively focuses on security and privacy. If you want a reasonably secure phone but don't want Google or Apple inside your device, your best bet is GOS.
Atleast you were trying to poke around their APIs. My WhatsApp account was banned totally for no reason. They blocked my two year old account for the only possible reason of using GrapheneOS. This company deserves to die.
While censorship is one thing, they forgot another overlooked ability of these app stores: pushing unwanted apps/services to our personal devices without our knowledge. The fact that the majority of people don’t care about this censorship and backdoors makes me think we don’t really appreciate the concept of freedom, and maybe we are okay with being slaves—at least until we cannot take it anymore. Maybe that’s why history repeats itself every few decades to remind us about these values.
>While censorship is one thing, they forgot another overlooked ability of these app stores: pushing unwanted apps/services to our personal devices without our knowledge
When was the last time the play store or app store pushed apps "without our knowledge"? I've only heard of it done by shady third party bloatware that OEMs bundle with the OS. The actual issue is a system that can perform OTA updates, not app stores themselves.
>What about when Google pushed Android Safety Core to all Android devices out there?
You mean the package that apps have to opt in to use? I guess that's technically counts as "unwanted apps/services", but that's like complaining about firefox "pushing unwanted apps/services", because they added some javascript function to every firefox installation out there.
>And you also realize they can push modified build of any apps, now that they also own the keys to sign the apps?
If you read my original comment more carefully, you'll notice I'm not denying they have the capability to do so, only that there's no precedence of them doing so.
It happened a few months ago with Gemini at least for Android, probably similar for Apple Intelligence on iOS although I can't comment since I don't use it anymore.
Well, unless https://github.com/signalapp becomes inaccessible, I guess that "all you have to do" is run a bunch of new instances of the server by ourself. Not sure how complicated it is though.
I don't think they will actively "pull" their services. They are based in the US, and don't specifically target EU customers. I guess they just won't comply and might be blocked.
Apple and Google dominates the entire smartphone market today. They are ad companies running on surveillance economy. In addition, their platforms are proprietary, privacy invading and freedom disrespecting.
GrapheneOS is the only security and privacy focused alternative we have today. Please support GrapheneOS by nominating them in the 2025 Proton Lifetime Fundraiser.
So at any point in time, atleast one government pushes for encryption backdoors. I can't wait to see the faces of these morons when the backdoor backfires on their own government secrets.
Never say never. All it takes is one case of the encrypted data being outside a secure setting due to the 'human' factor, and then this mandated backdoor can be used to decrypt it.
Of course, they won't ever mandate a backdoor be added in their encryption system
I am sure that will cause a lot of trouble in many countries. How hard is it to click Record button for the important calls? I don't think a small project like GrapheneOS should spend time on every small request users want.
